Understanding Lymphatic Facilitation
~by Sophia LaGregg
The lymphatic system is a bodily system of organs and vessels similar to the circulatory system. It is part of the immune system and filters waste products out of our system. Unlike the circularity system which is powered by the heart, the lymphatic system relies on movement and gravity to move through the body.
Lymphatic facilitation is a gentle, skin deep massage used to stimulate the lymphatic system. While some people love the feeling of lymphatic massage and find it relaxing, usually people come to a lymphatic session with medical goals. Most lymphatic vessels are skin deep but a lot of lymph is also present in the spleen and abdominal cavity, so lymphatic sessions also include abdominal massage.
While lymphedema can sometimes have dangerous underlying causes, there are also many common, normal reasons for the lymphatic system to stagnate. Lymphatic massage is great for pregnancy swelling, swelling post surgery (or in the case of surgically removed lymph nodes), and muscle soreness. Many people also find relief from allergies, autoimmune conditions, and headaches.
